Technology for development of hybrid composite from PBSA, chitosan fillers and OMNC with improved antibacterial and barrier properties was developed. The technology was developed using two-roll mill LRM-S-110/3E (LabTech Engineering Company Ltd., Samutprakarn, Thailand).
Melt compounding of the pre-dried constituents of the PBSA based compositions at certain proportionality ratios (PBSA with 7 wt.% of C98 or C98M and various OMNC content of 1wt.%, 3 wt.% and 5 wt.% as well as PBSA with 10 wt.% of C98 or C98M and various OMNC content of 1wt.%, 3 wt.% and 5 wt.%) was performed in accordance with the results of the previous research carried out in the project testifying that at least 7 wt.% of chitosan additive is necessary to ensure antimicrobial properties of the composition. Melt compounding was done within 2 phases:
Main technological parameters were as follows:
The developed technology is suitable for manufacturing of PBSA based hybrid composites with chitosan additive and nanoclay by melt compounding. The technology allows obtaining the hybrid composite material, which can be transformed by cutting, grinding, pelletizing etc. to the desirable particle size for thermoplastic processing by compression molding, injection molding or extrusion-based techniques.
