Description of the Technology

The laboratory technology for development of lignin additive substituted bituminous binder was developed. The technology was based on following:

  • Preheating of bitumen up to 140oC;
  • Transfer of bitumen to oil bath pre-heated to ca 130 – 165oC;
  • Gradual introduction of lignin additive in the heated bitumen during 1 h at high-shear (3000-8000 rpm, depending on the chosen bitumen) while ensuring that mixing temperature is maintained at ca 160oC.

By using this technological approach substitution degree of up to 60 wt.% was achieved for the first time.

Applications

The developed technology was used for obtaining modified bitumen up to the maximum substitution degree of 60 %. The technology can be used for obtaining lignin additive modified bitumen binders with improved rut resistance, adhesion to aggregate and anti-oxidant stability

Advantages

By using this technological approach substitution degree of up to 60 wt.% was achieved for the first time.
