Abstract. Packet switching is closely related to the packet-transmission technology. Therefore, to better understand the switching process and the need for packet transmission, this work provides a brief, Internet, ATM, MPLS and Ethernet technology review. Packet communication network technologies are developing. If after several decades of packets transmission on switched voice channels, it now has the opposite happens. Explanation of development of the Next Generation Internet covers all types of information transmission is explained on the Siemens company SURPASS project base. Particular attention is paid to the development of routers and switches for use in the routers. is dealt with in High-performance router architecture and operation is separately on the Cisco 12000 router base . The book is intended as an educational tool for learning the second part of the Digital Switching System bachelor course. This work can also be used in addition to the literature in the telecommunications and computer networking course. Outline has been tested a lecture course in a third year Bachelor RTU ETF Telecommunication Institute.
