During the tsarist Russia women did not have any possibility to acguire higher education. Only in the beginning of the 20 th century women could obtain education in the volume of highschool at Higher Female Courses in St. Petersburg and Moscow. The academician of Latvian Academy of Sciences (1946) Ms. Lidija Liepiņa graduated from the Higher Female Courses in Moskow. In 1934 she was the fitst woman in the Soviet Union who received the professor’s degree and in 1937 she was awarded the degree of doctor of chemical sciences. Her researches concern absorbtion of gasses by activated coal and metal corrosion. The lecturer, Latvian farmaceutist and nutrisionist Ms. Irina Robežniece enterted the field ofchemistry in the 30-ies of fhe 20 th centrury with her research in the area of vitamins an enzymes. The honorary member of Latvian Academy of Sciences (1990) Ms. Magda Štaudingere Voita has spent fhe greatest part of her life in Germany. Together with spouse, the laureate of the Nobel Prize Mr. H. Štandinger, she has performed research in field of macromolecular substances.The academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (1971) professor (1961) Ms. Emilija Gudreniece devoted all her life span to the LVU (Latvian State University), RPI (Riga Politechnical Institute’s department of chemistry and the department of Material Sciences and Applied Chemistry of Rīga Technical University. She was the head of chair of organic and biotechnological sciences (1963-1989). She carried out the transfer from indandion chemistry to the new heterocyclic synthesis, based on B dikethos. She turned to the use of rapse oil as biodiesel fuel. The most important part of life the honorary member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (1992), Ms. Marija Šimanska, passed at the Institute of Organic Synthesis. She was the deputy director of the institute (1957-1975) and she laid the foundation for the catalytic research. The outstanding female scientists represent Latvian women in chemistry, witness the ability to withstand hardships and to achieve the set goals.
