The Production of Steel, Mineral Fertilizers, Gass and Oil Products in Latvia (1944-1990)

After the Second World war there was a sucessful development of steel production at Liepaja „Sarkanais Metalurgs”, scrap metal was used for smelting. In 1965 production was launched at the new modern workshop of smeter furnaces of marten type. In 1967 the factory of supherphosphate in Milgravis, Riga was forced to stop its activities due to high level of air pollution. In 1979 the factory of mineral fertilizers at Ventspils port started producing liquid complex mineral fertilizers (phosphates+nitrates). For a short period of time there was working the Riga oil processing plant, which supplied the republic wish lubricants. Oil products, benzine and heavy oils were delivered to Latvia from Novopolock in Belarus and Mazeiki in Lithuania. The gass plant in Riga was operational till 1962, but in Liepaja up to 1964. Burning gas was substituted natural gas from Dashava in Ukraina and later by natural gass from Siberia, which was stiocked in Inčukalns subterrenian gas hold, which supplied with gas also Estionia and Pskov region.
