The Industry of Cellulose, Paper, Plywood and Safety Matches in Latvia (1944-1990)

The greatest natural resources of Latvia are its forests. Pinewood serves to obtain turpentine and colophony, firtree wood for the production of cellulose and pulp, but birch wood for the production of plywood. Cellulose is produced at the combined cellulose and paper mill in Sloka according to the sulphute method. Paper is produced at the papermills in Sloka, Ligatne, Jugla, Jaunciems and Staicele. Paper of exceptional qualily is being produced in Līgatne. The most outsanding enterprises of plywood production are „Latvijas bērzs”, „Furnieris”,, „Lignums”, „Vulkāns”. The production of safety matches is concentrated in the enterprises „Komēta” in Rīga and „Baltija” in Liepaja.
