Pragmatics of Scientific Technical Vocabulary Communication
Applied Linguistics for Specialised Discourse 2009
Larisa Iļinska, Tatjana Smirnova

Today science is the major source of new concepts and consequently scientific technical vocabulary is the largest and the most intensively developing part of contemporary language. In such rapidly developing areas as IT, economics, telecommunications there is an entire body of terms that are coined ad hoc and often do not possess the features characteristic of traditional terms. Many terms appear to be not only polysemic, but also may be used figuratively; therefore their meaning may be realized only within a certain context. Taking into consideration the complicated processes underlying the rapid development of technical vocabulary it is necessary to analyze it in terms of pragmatics. The results of the present study may be used both for creation and updating of linguistic corpora and as the medium for further investigation of meaning transfer and meaning extension in scientific technical discourse.
