Unmanned Aerial Vehicles ( UAV) as the innovative concept and aircraft is progressing extremely fast within last years. The main aspect of this paper is to analyze potential capabilities of UAV in sake of security of the Republic of Latvia. Current research focuses on provisional necessities to deploy this kind of modern utility for execution of assigned tasks and missions of Latvian Navy, as well as possible operational solutions to be implemented for this. First Part of the paper is being dedicated for scrutinizing the history of Naval, Marine aviation, followed by the analogies and comparisons of expected developments in matters of UAV to be operationally deployed at sea and sea-adjacent areas. III and IV Parts of the paper analyze the conventional tasks and missions of Latvian Navy as well as means, tools and forces needed to complete them. The common analysis indicates huge potential of UAVs to be used for “Sea Control” and surveillance in areas of responsibilities at sea, as it has been described in Chapter V. Nevertheless, besides the impressive operational advantages of UAVs to be compared with surface ships, there are very specific features and requirements of this type of aircraft in naval operations, which are covered in Chapter VI. Last Chapter stipulates about capabilities of UAVs to be landed and recovered on deck of a ship; this capability will be ‘’a hot issue’’ especially for small sized ships. Research showing that : The historical review of developments of naval aviation to be compared with current evolving of UAVs, indicates a lot of common in these matters, especially within the context of naval operations; The operational advantages of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will be the major driving force of their steady development and massive naval deployment in future; When Latvian Naval Forces execute tasks and missions assigned by Law, they should use aircraft, organic and non-organic wing for Sea Control and surveillance within waters under Latvian jurisdiction; UAVs could be as the ‘’ship-borne’’ as ‘’shore-borne’’ for these missions. Due to common instability of ship’s deck at sea and complicated actions to be taken in order to even keel for the launch of UAV apparatus, Latvian Naval Forces should prefer the option of ‘’shore-borne’’ UAVs deployment, where aircraft landing and recovery will not be associated with ship’s deck either.
