2011
Valdis Seglins, Uldis-Jānis Sedmalis

This article describes the aim and major tasks to be completed during the implementation of State Research Programme Subsoil. The main goal of this programme is to promote the exploitation of Latvian subsoil by exploring and finding new raw materials and by development and elaboration of new products. The problems identified along with the concentrated potential of Latvian scientists allow distinguishing six interconnected research directions with high potential of application in the national economy. The development of these research directions would enable us to achieve high scientific results and demonstrate high synergy and substantial opportunities for development within numerous research priorities. 6 main research directions have been set as priorities: 1. Evaluation of Latvian clay suitability for development of new products and technologies. 2. Development of technologies for high disperse systems based on Latvian clays for new innovative applications in sorption processes, environmental technologies, medicine and cosmetics. 3. New ceramics products and technologies. 4. Technologies for energy efficient highly porous ceramic from Latvian clays. 5. Peat and sapropel as high value raw materials for new technologies and products with high added value. 6. New biotechnological products and technologies on the basis of porous ceramic. For the implementation of the aforementioned sub-projects 6 individual research groups at the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University have been formed. In the year 2010 these research groups have elaborated 17 research themes. For the needs of the Project flexible and aim-guided thematic groups have been formed, encompassing the fields of scientific research in geology, chemistry, biology, environmental and material sciences.
