Importance of Math Studies in Engineering Education (Assessment of Employers)

Expedience of the subjects included in the studies and the necessary amount of them are evaluated by what contribution the appurtenant subject gives in achieving common goals of the studies. Knowledge, skills and competences that will be provided to students by acquiring the specific subject and their expediency in the employer's point of view must be acknowledged to ensure a good quality of study process. Students' competency quality depends on the amount of the gained knowledge in some disciplines, but mostly on the ability to solve problems. Global changes in the national economy create the demand for engineers of certain qualification, that is why for the countries involved in the Bologna process it is important to create frame structure for qualifications. Taking into account that for a future engineer the formal basic knowledge is not enough, but integrated knowledge in various fields is necessary, qualifications can be divided into 2 groups: technical and professional qualifications. Engineering sciences are based on common solutions of mathematics, physics and technology. Computing technologies are often included in these fundamental sciences. Mathematics is necessary in engineering sciences because complexity of the tasks in engineering sciences is increasing and the processes of abstract information begin to play a significant role in technologies. In the syllabus of different educational instances of engineering sciences, math is included variously, but there are some basic requirements that must be followed by all universities. Employers' attitude towards the future engineers in each country may be different. That is why Latvian engineers of different fields (heat supply, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, gas supply, water supply and sewerage) who carry out real engineer work or teach at universities, were questioned. Their opinion about programmes of mathematics that future specialists in the field study was aggregated. Building on the research on mathematical knowledge and competencies that are provided in the study process of mathematics and necessary in the labour market of Latvia, necessity to improve study process of mathematics at universities arises. That could be achieved in two main ways: 1) development of study programs of mathematics (assessment of content and amount, change in accents, division of the content in levels, inclusion of IT programs) and 2) organization of the study process procedure (ICT inclusion into the learning process, amid-disciplinary approach, self-paced studies, diversification of the methods, creation of e-materials).
