The Production of Sugar, Starch, Spirti, Alchocolic Drinks and Beer in Latvia (1944-1990)

After the World War II there took place a rapid development of production of sugar, starch, spirit, alchocolic drinks and beer. The sugar factories of Jelgava, Jekabpils (Krustpils) and Liepāja processed Latvia grown sugarbeet and imported from Cuba raw sugar and sugarcane. In 1975 there were produced 256.1 thousand tons of crystalline sugar, of which amount 40.2 thousand tons were produced from sugarbeet and 115.9 thousand tons from raw sugar, obtained from sugarcane. The industry of spirit production was being developed by combining it with the starch production. The biggest enterprise in the field of spirit production was the association „Rīgas Balzāms”, which was ceated by joining Riga factory of production of liquar and alchocol with spirit ans starch factories in Talsi and Iecava. The enterprise included also spirit factories in Kalsnava and Kalkūne, as well as starch factories in Preili and Lizums. Starch was also produced by spirti and starch factory in Saldus and by starch factory in Aloja. In 1975 the total output was 1614 thousand decaliters of spirit and 3614 tons of starch. Fruit and berry wines were produced by wine brewery „Rīga” and „Veldze”, but grape wines – by Riga combined factory of wines and shampagne. In 1975 there were produced 1614 thousand decaliters of spirit, 2435 thousand decaliters of grape wines and 1888 thousand decaliters of fruit and berrywines. The bigest enterprises of beer production „Aldaris”, „Iļģuciems”, „Vārpa”, as well as beer breweries in Daugavpils, Vidzeme, Rēzekne, Liepāja un Cēsis totally produced 9203 thousand decaliters of beer. The most popular brands of beer were Žiguļi, Senču, Marta, Rīgas, Maskavas, Iļģuciems dark beer and Aldaris beer. On the bases of malt there were produced drinks „Veselība” and „Krievu kvass” [1,2].
