Cities expanded and city environment changed due to urbanization at the second half of the 19th century. A health resort for treatment and recreation in nature was established in Liepaja. Summer cottages in the Seaside park affected the city planning. "Swiss style" building facades were decorated with wooden openwork ornaments. Resort in Liepaja was closed in 1992. Many of the ancient buildings were abandoned. This research highlights the significance of the cultural heritage for the preservation of the identity of Liepaja.
