The Use of Hemp Shives with Hydraulic Lime Binder in Insulation Materials

The use of locally available construction materials with good insulation capabilities is one of the ways to reduce CO2 emissions created by the construction industry and use of buildings. Building material made of hemp shives with hydraulic lime binder can have good insulation properties, as well as can be carbon neutral or even negative, as hemp sequesters carbon through growth. The use of it has other advantages too – it is partly made of renewable resources, it is non - allergic and regulates indoor air humidity because of its hygroscopic abilities. The main goal of this research is to create a composite building material made of locally available hemp shives and lime with hydraulic additives and conduct it`s properties. First, properties of different hydraulic lime and hemp shiv mixes are tested, in search of the best proportion for the local conditions with satisfactory compressive strength. Second, tests measuring compressive strength and thermal conductivity, and finding correlation between them, for different mixes, are being made. The results indicate that locally available resources such as hemp and lime in correct proportions have good thermal insulation properties and satisfactory compressive strength to be used as a one-layer self-bearing monolithic wall around structural timber frame. Results also show that more tests focusing on preparation of the mix and hardening conditions, and how they affect compressive and thermal properties, are needed.
