Calcium Phosphate Biocomposite Coatings on Titanium

Calcium phosphate (CaP) biocomposite coatings that mimic natural bone demonstrated the ability to improve cell attachment and proliferation in bone-contact applications. The study and comprehension of the interaction between optimized implant surface and the biological system can bring major improvements in the design of next generation implantable devices. The incorporation of compositions that already exist in the body – nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) – with resorbable organic polymer – chitosan (CH) matrix – can accelerate in situ the specific interaction with bone cell surface receptors and thus can properly direct cell proliferation and differentiation. In this study we developed CaP biocomposite coatings by exploiting electrochemical surface modification technology in order to tune phase composition and microstructural characteristic.
