In order to reduce the fuel consumption of vehicles, one of the solutions is the replacement of constructive elements of existing cars to more lightweight constructions. Lightweight constructions may be obtained by processing plant fibres of natural origin into composites, for example, hemp fibres. Use of the natural fibres facilitates the implementation of EP Directive 2009/28/ec. Within the framework of this project nonwoven multi-layer material was made from hemp and polylactide (PLA) fibres. Nonwoven was made with the purpose to obtain a composite from it. All nonwoven and composite samples made were produced and tested at the Institute of Textile Technology, RWTH Aachen University. The proportion of fibres used for making nonwoven was hemp fibres 60 wt% and PLA fibres 40 wt%. Before working the fibres into nonwoven they were prepared: loosened with the airlaid technology, smoothly mixed and then fibre web layers were made. A mechanical fibre linking method was used for fixing the web layers of the prepared fibres – needle punching method. In total, 5 nonwoven samples were obtained, 6 strips were cut from each sample (300 × 50 mm); 4 strips were cut out towards the machine direction and 2 strips perpendicular to the machine direction. A part of the samples cut out towards the machine direction were used to make composites with a thermal press. Geometrical parameters were determined and tensile strength checked for nonwoven and composite strip samples. Furthermore, 3 point bending test was performed for composites.
