Nanomaterials in Military Technology

Nanomaterials are defined as materials with at least one external dimension in the size range from approximately 1 - 100 nanometers. Nanoparticles are objects with all three external dimensions at the nanoscale. Engineered nanoparticles are intentionally produced and designed with very specific properties related to chemistry, size, shape, surface properties. These properties are reflected in powders or colloids. Nanoparticle research is currently the most studied branch of science with the number of uses of nanoparticles in various fields of military technology. The particles have wide variety of potential applications in optical,electronic fields, sencors, thin coatings, robots, intelligent apparel systems and explosives. Often, the behavior of nanomaterials may depend more on surface area than particle composition itself. Relative - surface area is one of the principal factors that enhance its reactivity, strength and electrical properties. Nanomaterials can be designed at the atomic level, lending more control over their properties, and making them better suited to their desired purpose. Today nanomaterials are used in many of the world's most powerful armies. Nano composite can have wide applications due to its favorable properties. So using nanocomposites and building materials with new properties can require many of the marine and military industries. Nanomaterials can be designed to create exceptionally strong armor, ballistic body and vehicle armor, for example, is made from an aluminum alloy combined with carbon nanotubes. The ballistic armor plate is multi - impact capable, durable, lightweight, and available now.
