The Current State of Affairs and Development Problems of Energy Terminology in Latvian

The paper presents current situation, problems and challenges related to the development of energy terminology in Latvian, which encompasses the fields of power, electrical and thermal engineering. Though there is a detailed methodology for the formation of Latvian terminology in general, arguments are given for development of separate guidelines for terminology of the energy field. Efforts of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in the field of standardisation and terminology of electrical engineering are summarised to give an example of a broad and detailed multilingual term system which should be adopted in Latvian as closely as possible to achieve international harmonisation. As of now, only a part of IEC terms have been adopted in Latvian that do not cover all the subfields of electrical engineering thus hindering adaptation of international standards and unambiguous overall usage of terminology. For consistent development of Latvian terminology, a proper legislation should be established to define a single national regulatory authority responsible for development of terminology and its publication in a national terminology database. The actual usage of terminology in the private and public sector should be monitored and adjusted in line with the approved terminology. To ensure clear communication among professionals from the very beginning of their career, vocational and higher education curricula should include training in the respective fields of terminology in Latvian and at least two foreign languages.
