Applying the descriptive (monographic) method, the author discusses examples of renovating and reconstructing historic architectural objects from Riga, Latvia, and the entire world. Special attention is dedicated to 1) designers’ attitude towards historically authentic parts and elements of buildings; 2) methods and techniques, as well as materials and technologies used in creating reconstructed replicas; 3) architectural ideas and concepts to clarify methodological principles and ensure consistency; 4) historic reference and educational potential of the newly created matter, i.e. the juxtaposition of the old (authentic) and the new (remodeled), and its visual perceptibility. The aim of particular research is to distinguish between approximate and subjective methods and techniques applied in renovating, reconstructing and rebuilding historic architectural objects without clear scientific substantiation, and techniques and concepts that provide the clearest and highest quality juxtaposition of the historic matter to the new created value with the highest cognitive and educational potential, and maximum of visual recognisability.
