The present paper analyses and describes the academic dress in Latvia over a period of time starting with the foundation of the first University in Riga at the time when Latvia was part of tsarist Russia to the present time. There is also a short insight into the design of the academic dress for the administration, academic staff and students of Riga Technical University. It has been designed taking into consideration the traditions of academic dress in Latvia, as well as the world Universities. The paper presents suits worn by the students of Riga Polytechnical Institute before the First World War. It also looks into the history and the process of introducing student headwear. An illustration of such headwear design is displayed. The paper also discusses the reason why first academic gowns for professors were introduced, describes the process of introducing them and their design, as well as introduces the dress code and wearing rules and identifies the manufacturer. The paper gives a brief chronological insight into the history and design of academic dress of other Latvia universities and institutions of higher education. It also looks at all present-day existing garments accepted at Riga Technical University.
