The Riddle of Metaphorical Term Creation in LSP Texts
Society and Languages in the Third Millennium: Communication. Education. Translation 2019
Larisa Iļinska, Oksana Ivanova

Meaning creation is a process of great importance, especially in todays’ period of dynamic lexical innovation and creativity. The present paper studies the mechanisms of new meaning creation and extension focusing on metaphorization as a basic cognitive process. One of the main areas of research in cognitive linguistics is the conceptual metaphor theory. A more recent framework developed by Fauconnier and Turner (2001) is the theory of conceptual blending or conceptual integration, which unifies the analysis of metaphor with the analysis of a variety of other linguistic and cognitive phenomena. Conceptual blending is a set of cognitive operations unifying words, images or ideas in a network of mental spaces to create a new meaning. The research of the potential of natural language resources to create the endless number of meaning combinations, namely, a large number of metaphorical terms, is based on one of the most dynamically developing varieties of language – the language of science and technology. Metaphor as one of the most important phenomena of cognition is a key aspect and the main riddle of term production in LSP texts.
