The discipline of Informatics in Latvian secondary schools due to changes in secondary education standards is getting explicitly pragmatic subject. This process has both positive and negative consequences. Positive is that in secondary schools now are trained overall skilled computer users, but negative is that now universities matriculate schools’ graduates whose do not have academic knowledge in computers and informatics. This situation could be improved by appropriate post-graduate training of secondary schools teachers in Informatics providing issues directed learning process in secondary schools to academic way keeping positive properties of new (pragmatic) approach. In Latvian Republic for rural teachers in Informatics due to their immobile lifestyle there are much less life-long learning opportunities then for metropolises’ teachers. RTU has experience in providing via Internet post-graduate training for rural teachers in Informatics. At the moment RTU is implementing approved by Ministry of Education and Science continuing education programme that envisages one face-to-face introductory meeting, further work via Internet and closing (performing a credit test) in presence again. Building up the task in hand RTU within the frame of supported by ESF project is developing long-term environment for continuing education of teachers and their mutual practical work.
