Translational Vibrations of the Flat Plate with Elastic Suspension in the Air Flow

The goal of the study was exploring the possibility of energy production from the vibration of the body in the air focusing on the example of the flat plate. Theory suggests that at certain conditions and excitation parameters vibrations of the system increases so that energy can be produced from it. Additional energy can be extracted from flutter motion - an aeroelastic instability that results in a self-excited oscillation. The flutter is usually considered as the negative side effect that engineers try to eliminate, but in this study, we look for ways how to benefit from it. The experiment in the wind tunnel was set up to study this phenomenon. The flat plate is fixed in a flexible suspension and is affected by the air flow. The suspension is designed in such a way that the plate does not rotate but moves in a translational motion. First, the air flow was set up in different ways to study the response of the plate. Then, the suspension was set up to be linear or non-linear, including impact shocks. For this purpose, an electric generator damping system has been developed, in which the resistance forces can be linear or non-linear. The study used the theory of non-stationary air flow interaction analysis, developed by the authors. This improvement allows to replace bulky time-space data processing methods with leaner option - solving ordinary differential equations for a system with two degrees of freedom (2DOF). Using computer modeling in MathCAD software, the movements of the object in the air flow was analysed. Some areas of the system at specific excitation conditions produced stable “flutter” type oscillations. In addition, mechatronic control of an energy generator was varied to study conditions close to dry friction, viscous friction or nonlinear velocity function. Graphs with changes in the center coordinate and velocity components of the 2DOF plate as well as in the phase plane were composed to illustrate solution.
