Gaseous Fuels Future of Europe - Regional Development from a Global Perspective
2021
Namejs Zeltiņš, Leo Jansons

At present, the positions of gaseous fuels, particularly natural gas, are more uncertain in Europe than ever. Natural gas and renewable the mixture of gases (AG) is considered to be one of the cornerstones of a sustainable and secure energy transition, but formally as such not recognised. There are other points of view: for example, that gaseous fuels are too expensive and unsafe by default to it would support the decarbonisation of the European energy sector, but it will not be possible to do so in a transparent future. Of course sometimes radical voices are also heard asking whether natural gas and AG should play any role in the energy transition at all. In the view of this rather rhetorical question, the sooner Europe will completely abandon the use of gaseous fuels, the better. However, from a rational and practical point of view, the idea that the world and Europe could grow drastically over the next decade reducing the use of natural gas and AG and still achieving its climate and environmental goals isn't overly convincing. But equally questionable is the notion that natural gas will be given privileged positions in the long-term decarbonisation of energy In Europe. The truth is more likely to be somewhere in the middle between these “anti-polies” and about what role natural gas will be dedicated to Europe the greening of national energy in the medium and long term will still have to be debated a lot.
