Changes in Math Teaching due to the COVID-19 Pandemic at Riga Technical University

The authors of the article discuss problems and opportunities entailed with transition to distance learning at the Riga Technical University (RTU). Initially transition to distance learning induced by COVID-19 pandemic was quite a challenge for both the teachers and the students. Though, rearrangement of a daily work ensured not only sustainability but also constant improvement of the study process. The online teaching materials available at RTU webpage ORTUS served as a basis for transition from full-time learning to distance learning: the lecture notes, examples of solutions, presentations, tests and recorded lectures uploaded on YouTube. The authors analyse use of the Mathematics e-learning materials in distance learning, they show, which materials students enjoyed and exercised the most. The authors reflect on the tests as one of the students evaluation means, they analyse the achieved results. The author review lectures recorded on video as another distance-learning tool. The entire basic course of the Mathematics has been digitalised by means of the video lectures 5-30 minutes long available for students on YouTube. For now, this is the first and sole video teaching course of this kind available in Latvian that complies with RTU Mathematics curriculum. The authors of the article also summarized thoughts of the lecturers of the RTU department of the Engineering Mathematics about distance learning, the pros and cons. Both students and lecturers marked lack of communication, absence of direct interaction between student and teacher as one of the main drawbacks of the distance learning. Mastering of a digital- pedagogical skills as well as ability to apply the distance learning methods at full-time studies was recognized as one of the main acquisitions. Analysing results of the lecturers’ survey, the authors conclude that a combination of the full-time and the distance learning is the most successful contemporary teaching method.
