Biodiesel is one of the most perspective sources of energy. It can be obtained from biomass containing long chain fatty acids or their esters. Rapeseed oil is the most popular raw material for biodiesel in Latvia. It is popular because the weather conditions in Latvia are appropriate for rapeseed cultivation and the qualitative indices of obtained biodiesel are very close to diesel. At present the price of biodiesel in comparison with diesel is relatively high and the interest of consumers in using this environmentally friendly vehicle fuel is relatively low. In Latvian market the price of 100% biodiesel is higher than in many other EU countries. To involve consumers in using biodiesel the price of 100% biodiesel should be at least 20% lower than of pure diesel, calculating according to the current price. This factor is attributed to lower energy value of biodiesel. Production costs can be reduced by optimizing the technology of synthesis of biodiesel. To put this into practice, the research of kinetics of transesterification reaction of rapeseed oil obtained in Latvia is carried out in this paper, using temperature conditions and concentrations of raw materials typical for manufacturing processes. .
