This study presents the design for a small-scale wind turbine especially created for low-speed wind regions. Geographically, the Baltic region of Europe is low-speed wind zone, therefore, Baltic countries (Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia) are the main focus of this study. The study is part of the research project funded by the Latvian Council of Science with the goal to create innovative, aerodynamically improved, and eco-friendly products. A small-scale horizontal axis wind turbine with a diameter of 4.2m was designed and its performance was analyzed. The wind turbine blade was designed from the newly generated and optimized airfoil SG6043mod of the authors’ previous study [1]. The proposed wind turbine blade was designed in accordance with Schmitz’s theory, while the performance analysis and comparison of results were carried out using CFD-based analysis. The wind turbine performance was evaluated at different windspeed ranges. The results showed that the proposed wind turbine demonstrated better performance, particularly in low windspeed ranges i.e., 3- 8 m/sec, than in the high-speed zones. A comparison of the designed wind turbine with the commercially available small-scale wind turbines (of the similar rotor diameter range) is also presented in the study, which manifests that the power output of the proposed wind turbine is close to the commercial wind turbines for the low-speed winds (3-8 m/sec). Further verification and improvements in the design, along with experimental testing, are planned for the future.
