Graphene Nanoplatelets and Carbon Nanotubes as Effective Highstrain Property Enhancers of an Epoxy Matrix

This work compares the tensile strength, Charpy toughness, and fracture toughness of two-component epoxy composites filled with 0 – 0.5 vol.% of multiwall carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets. A neat sample and eight composites were prepared using high shear mixing and mold casting techniques. The mechanical tests (tensile testing, Charpy impact testing, K1c bending testing) permitted the evaluation of the extent of interaction between the carbon nanotube and graphene nanoplatelets via a regression model, and their influence on the overall high strain properties of the composites. Critical filler concentrations are estimated around 0.25 %, where the highest property increases are seen.
