The aim of this study is to characterize colloquial expressions from lexical and textual point of view, as well as editorial staff's linguistic attitude towards colloquial usage in regional newspapers. The practical material consists of four regional newspapers issues of one month - "Auseklis", Vidzeme's newspaper for Limbažu district (in January 2023); "Kurzemes Vārds", a newspaper for Liepāja and South Kurzeme (in July 2023); "Kurzemnieks", newspaper for Viduskurzemei (May 2023) and "Saldus Zeme", a newspaper for Saldus region (January 2023). Newspapers have different publication frequency and circulation. "Kurzeme Vārds" is published every working day (circulation: 6840 copies), "Auseklis" - on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (circulation: 3450 copies), but "Kurzemnieks" (run: 2400 copies) and "Saldus Zeme" (circulation: 2610 copies) - on Tuesdays and Fridays. To clarify the principles of editing and the linguistic attitude of editorial staff against the use of colloquial language, the qualitative research method was used - conducted a questionnaire and an express interview with a freelance correspondent. On the questionnaire questions have been answered by 10 respondents - all four regional newspapers representatives who are considered experts: editors of two newspapers (one including the literary editor), two literary editors / proofreaders and six female journalists. .
