Gardening as Art
2024
Maija Demitere

The article compiles insights gained from long-term artistic practice regarding the monitoring of food consumption, the role of food in daily life, and the potential for year-round food cultivation using available living space as efficiently as possible. The study offers insights from Demitere's research on the significance and potential of gardening practices in individual daily life, using it as an approach to managing stress and anxiety. One of Demitere's developed interactive installations, the "Tomato-Potato Calculator," is examined, which allows the estimation of how much food can be grown depending on the available space and cultivation methods. Additionally, the role of gardening practices in contemporary life is discussed, their impact on an individual's creativity, patience, and emotional well-being, as well as their social and emotional dimensions as aspects of "slow" media art practices and "deep" sustainability.
