Graphic Reconstructions of Riga Castle
Rīgas pils arhitektūra un vēsture 2024
Ilmārs Dirveiks

In 2023, the author of this article prepared several graphic reconstructions of Riga Castle, focusing only on the castellum with outer bailey. They were based on the information that was available until that time. Four bird’s-eye views of the castle were drawn: Riga Castle in the late 14th century, Riga Castle in the 16th century, Riga Castle in the early 17th century, and Riga Castle in the late 17th century, as well as two longitudinal sections of the south wing — in the 16th century and the late 19th century. Historical architectural reconstructions foster interdisciplinary discussions between historians, archaeologists, architects, and art historians. At the same time, graphic reconstructions are a means of promoting and explaining cultural heritage to the public in a more palatable form. Drawings are easier to use than written information and illustrations are best viewed at the historic site. In the case of Riga Castle, it is expected that the drawings with commentaries will be displayed in the museum’s exhibition. Simultaneously, they are a type of graphic account of what has been discovered and understood during the last quarter century of historical research at the Castle. Research at Riga Castle will continue in the foreseeable future with the hope that it will be possible to continue to produce new, more informative graphic reconstructions.
