Nowadays, significant processes in the development of the Latvian language are taking place in social media, so it is important to study their impact on the relationship between the literary language and colloquial language and to analyze what issues about the quality of the Latvian language are discussed in social media and what forms their content. Although theoretically, the literary language and colloquial language have clear areas of use in their sociolinguistic functions, in many cases a fundamental distinction is not observed in language practice. The expansion of the use of colloquial language is also promoted by the influence of social media. Latvians form a speech community that is not indifferent to language issues. The quality of the Latvian language, or rather, its lack, is most often associated with language usage errors in the broadest sense. Social media users express a negative linguistic attitude towards those who publish erroneous entries on various official accounts, where literary language should be used and its norms should be observed, although social media is an informal communication environment. Alongside justified criticisms, there are also metalinguistic comments that see the positive in the Latvian language and its use. It is very important to talk on social media not only about poor language use, expressing a pessimistic linguistic attitude towards the future of the Latvian language, but also to remind society of the richness of the Latvian language.
