On the Identity of Business Informatics

Business Informatics is a concept that is used as a title for study programs offered by both business schools and engineering educational institutions. Understanding of the notion varies from program to program therefore there is no common view on what exactly is Business Informatics and what is specifics of professionals educated by Business Informatics study programs. This uncertainty hinders the promotion of the discipline, in terms of the students’ trust in value of education and the professors’ willingness to structure their subjects under the umbrella of Business Informatics. By analyzing various Business Informatics programs and their relationships to neighboring disciplines, the paper tries to identify the core Business Informatics features that distinguishes it from other disciplines and proposes basic elements of the Business Informatics identity core model.
