Production of Rubber, Plastic, Leather, Lacquer And Paint in Latvia (1918 -1940)

During the years reviewed in the article there were 3 rubber factories in Latvia: „Varonis”, „Kvadrāts” and „Kontinents” (Meteors). 13 % of the production volume was exported (1936). In 1940 the number of the employed in the rubber industry was 1900. After the war the paint factories of V. Hjords, J. Kohs and E. Rozītis were reopened. A new factory of M. KalniĦš was opened, which performed very successfully. About 50 enterprises in Latvia were processing leather, 30 of them were located in Riga. One of the largest enterprises was the „Korona” factory in Liepāja employing about 200 people. In 1934 A. Jirgensons, assistant of the 89 Chemical Department of University of Latvia , launched the production of casein polymer – galalite. About 20 % of the production volume was exported under the trademark of”Lettoid”.
