Production of Cellulose, Paper, Soap and Drugs in Latvia (1918-1944)

In 1935 Latvia produced 13192 t of cellulose as well as 27447 t of paper of which 2662 t of cellulose and 9752 t of paper were exported. In 1935 paper was produced by 9 enterprises with 2148 of employed. The value of the production was 12.238 mil Lats. In 1940 there were about 400 employed in the production of safety matches. The largest enterprises were “Vulkāns” in Liepāja (167 workers) and “Vezuvs” in Riga (69 workers). In 1940 the amount production of safety matches was 94600 standard boxes (one standard box contained 1000 packages of safety matches). The factory of dry distillation of wood produced methyl alcohol, vinegar acid and acetone. Turpentine and colophony were produced from the stumps of coniferous trees. In 1935 Latvia produced 2930 t of soap. The factory “Medfro” produced mostly calcium gluconate and red streptocide (prontosile). “Farmacija” produced morphium, codeine and codeine phosphate. The Serum station in Kleisti produced various biological preparations.
