Our time is called as a time of development and challenge. To apprehend this time in the area of seafaring, author have studied statistic of Latvian fleet and perspective of development. The theme studied is becoming actual under current events now, when European Commssion have initiated the “green” book on marine policy. What are the perspectives in Latvian maritime industry? – If there is nothing to be done to secure the national interests in European Union, then our country will loose positions both in European and global maritime markets. Of course, everything as always, is in our hands. The particulars of the rate of tonnage tax applicable in other countries could give the insight in Latvian position in the industry.
