Determination of the Necessity of Protection Measures against the Dangerous Influence of Lightning and Their Choice for Structures

In this article a description of the existing situation and explanations about lightning protection, overvoltage protection, and other protection measures against the dangerous influence of lightning, for example, shielding or equipotential bonding, for structures and the service lines that are connected to those structures are given – a description and explanations about norms (building norm LBN 201-07 “Firesafety of structures” and the standards in force), risk management that is described in the standard LVS EN 62305-2, usage of computer programs, to automatically perform the necessary calculations and to speed up and make easier risk management, and the choice of suitable protection measures according to the results of risk assessment. Also findings are given about the meaning resp. importance of risk components in the selection of protection measures. As well as the problems resp. drawbacks of risk management are described. In this article two possibilities, how it is possible to improve the existing situation, are proposed – by implementation of a special table for a quick choice of the class of LPS and determination of the need for SPDs and/or by using intervals of values, i.e., continuous random variables, according to their distribution laws, instead of “fixed” values of parameters in the calculations, that are necessary for risk assessment.
