The problem of free form surfaces visualization with high quality is actual in various areas of science, design and engineering. There are various mathematical descriptions in the computer graphics that describe a rational free-form surface. One of the most effective, powerful and flexible descriptions is NURBS surface. The synthesis of 3D images presently develops in two different directions: in the first one the main characteristic is image rendering speed and in the other – the approach is intended to obtain an image with high accuracy and degrees of realness without any time limitation. In this work, one of methods of 3D scenes high-quality visualization – ray tracing is described. This method is a popular approach of high quality visualization. In this work the new method is proposed that gives the possibilities to render NURBS surface with high accuracy and quality. In this work the comparison with known algorithm (Martin et al.) is made. The methods are compared by two characteristics – image quality and rendering time. The comparison is made using three different examples (three geometrical models). The proposed method gives better results from the viewpoint of the quality of the image. Also, the proposed method gives the best result on rendering’s time too. As seen from the results of experiments, the diference in rendering quality is especially apparent on surfaces borders. On the other hand, the rendering time difference is 13%-21%, with the proposed method being the quickest one.
