One Approach to Development of a 3D Model for Medical Images

This paper describes one of the approaches to 3D model construction based on computer tomography. This approach uses two different algorithms to create a 3D model: Control point selection algorithm and triangulation algorithm. Control point selection algorithm chooses a set of points on every given tomogram, This set of points describes the object’s contours, that are used to create a 3D model. The points are chosen in a following way: firstly the original point is selected, which is located on a first intersection of a straight line (that goes through the center of the object) and the object’s contour. Then this point is used to create a circle around it with a given search radius and then the algorithm looks for this circle’s and object’s contour intersection points. In the beginning any one of two found points is selected, then this point becomes a new center for the search circle and once again the algorithm looks for this circle’s and object’s contour intersection points. When only two points are found, the new search circle’s radius is the point which is farthest from the previously selected point. If more than two points are found, the search radius decreases until only two points are found. Triangulation algorithm uses a set of points which is created using control point selection algorithm. These points are used to create triangles, which are then used to construct the 3D model. The proposed algorithms were used to construct a 3D model of a human head. The resulting model was then compared to other models that were created by other approaches. In comparison it was noted that this paper’s given approach provides the smoothest 3D surface and the distortion is minimal. The main disadvantage of this approach is that it uses only one contour on each tomogram to create the 3D model. So if a given object is described using several disconnected contours, this approach will use only one contour and that can create distortion.
