In this paper problems with videoconferencing implementation in local networks are discussed. There is discussed videoconference implementation in wireless (802.11 b/g/n) local networks as well as in wire (Ethernet) local networks. In the paper limitations of streamed videoconference data in local networks are discussed, as well as suggestions on videoconference data transmission protocols’ and video coding algorithm selection are proposed. In practice part of the paper two videoconferencing scenarios where investigated. The first one is videoconferencing in wireless local area network (802.11g), and the second one is videoconferencing in wire local area network (100 Mb Ethernet). In the scenario, when videoconferencing was done using wireless medium three computers where used to imitate videoconference data transmission between users. These three computers generate video traffic and send it over the network, and one of them uses FTP server to send data to two otherers, which have installed this data demanded FTP clients, thus imitation of videoconference usage over intensively used communication channel. As merit of received video information rating two criteria where used. The first one is a delta time – time between two (n and n+1) received RTP packets and the second one is jitter in three cases: without enabled QoS support, without enabled QoS support but over intensively used communication channel and with enabled QoS support (802.11e), sending videoconference data over intensively used communication channel. In the second scenario videoconference data was streamed between laboratories, which are in one wire local area network. An ability of cheap hardware and freeware usage to obtain a videoconference with good quality.
