2010
Aija Rēdmane

This article explores the dynamics of the development of intermodal container traffic from the moment of their appearance to date, and also provided data about the main regions of the flow of container traffic. It also describes organization of a modern terminal using container terminal at a seaport as an example, which is the largest facility in intermodal transport. When reviewing marine container terminal organization not only the main technological areas and in these zones occurring processes are listed, but also used mechanization resources. After reviewing various technological processes of transhipment of containers a comparative analysis of these processes is performed, with regard to factors such as productivity of the crane, the density of storage containers at the storage yard, the necessary investments and etc. The latter part of the article examines the concept of an automated container terminal, which is currently becoming increasingly popular among terminal operators.
