According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) data, around the world 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 suffer an osteoporotic fracture. Calcium phosphate (CaP) biomaterials have demonstrated considerable achievements in bone reconstructive surgery. Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) materials composed of a stable phase - hydroxyapatite (HAp), and a soluble phase - β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) provide the ability to control the balance between the bioactivity and the solubility in the living body. Furthermore, the presence of Mg in calcified living tissues suggests that Mg ions might improve the biocompatibility and bioactivity of CaP ceramics. It is expected that Mg-substituted BCP (Mg-BCP) bioceramics will ensure faster and more efficient recovery of the damaged bone by decomposing into environment of body and gradually releasing Mg ions able to act on bone diseases as osteoporosis. With the goal to prepare Mg-BCP bioceramic, this study is devoted to in-situ preparation of Mg-BCP powders and to assesing the effect of Mg on characteristics of BCP products.
