Micro arc oxidation (MAO) is a relatively new type of surface treatment and strengthening with mainly metallic materials that originates from traditional anodization and correspondingly pertains to electrochemical processes. Micro arc oxidation allows obtaining multipurpose ceramic-like coatings with a unique combination of properties including wear resistance, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, electric insulation as well as decorative properties. The author's experiments were carried out with the help of an assembled multipurpose plant, the design of which makes it possible to carry out micro arc oxidation using valve alloy samples (Al, Mg, Ti, Ta, Nb, Zr, Be, etc.) depending on technical characteristics and requirements for coatings. The application of light structural valve alloys helps to reduce the consumption of expensive alloys; the weight is reduced, and the possibility of adjusting the structural performance characteristics of working coatings is provided too. Determination of dependencies among the composition of the material being treated and treatment parameters and conditions will make it possible to obtain coatings with improved service properties and expand the sphere of their application. The area of MAO application is virtually unlimited. However, it should be kept in mind that this method is intended for parts made of valve metals, i.e. metals, the oxide films of which formed by electrochemical method have unipolar (unidirectional) conductivity in the "metal-oxide-electrolyte" system. Such metals in the first place include aluminium (Al) and its alloys as well as magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr) and beryllium (Be).
