Calcium phosphate based biomaterials are prospective materials for the bone defect repair and regeneration. Among them, calcium phosphate bone cements (CPC) are the most suitable for local drug delivery, as drugs can be easily incorporated into the cement, while it is in paste form. To control the drug release from CPC, the drugs can be encapsulated in biodegradable polymers. The main disadvantage of CPC is their low mechanical strength [3]. Drug capsules may act as defects in matrix lowering the strength of the cements. To improve the mechanical properties of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) based CPC intended for drug delivery, cements were reinforced with biodegradable fibres. The effect of drug loaded microcapsules and reinforcing fibres on mechanical properties of CPC was investigated.
