Natural apatite, thermally treated natural apatite, synthetic hydroxyapatite and calcium deficient hydroxyapatite have been hydrothermally modified using H2O, H2O2 or NaHCO3. The change of hydroxyl and carbonate concentration is investigated and the structural modifications for anionic substitutions are discussed.
