Testing as a Method for Assessing Students' Knowledge
2019
Inta Volodko, Sarmīte Čerņajeva

The evaluation of student knowledge with the help of tests on the internet is a rather new method of evaluating and controlling education. It offers many different ways of modernizing and optimizing the learning process. In this paper, the author attempts to tackle the important questions, which arise on the topic of using these tests. Are students taking these tests seriously? Do these tests give objective results and what should be done to achieve them? The method used in the work is an analysis of mathematics tests results. These tests were compiled by Department of Engineering Mathematics of Riga Technical University teachers, and these tests replace most of the homework given in the 1st semester. The statistics used in this work were created using the tests done by students of Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology in the 1st semester of academic year 2017/2018. The results show that an effective way of teaching in mathematics is a combined effort of multiple methods of teaching, however, correctly made tests and a correct grading system combined with other testing methods gives objective results.
