The article deals with the problems associated with the environmental safety of cars. In particular, the ways of reducing the toxicity of exhaust gases are considered. The analysis of the initial and subsequent stages for the study and standardization of the emission values of the main toxic components of the internal combustion engine is carried out. It is concluded that it is necessary to develop an objective comprehensive methodology for assessing the environmental and economic performance of vehicles in the development and implementation of various measures to reduce emissions. The development of a methodology for investigating emissions of harmful substances by the method of assessing the total indicator of emissions, taking into account their relative aggressiveness, is reflected.
