The main reason for the high growth in the consumption of energy resources in the production of shunting work at marshalling station is the increase in the volume of work associated with the re-sorting of cars, redundant mileage and unproductive downtime of shunting locomotives. One of the most important tasks in modern conditions is the raise of energy efficiency by improving the existing technology of cargo handling, making the rational choice of placement of shunting locomotives, reducing the number of shunting operations performed at the marshalling station, using resource-saving technologies. The urgent solution to improve the energy and resource efficiency of the transport and logistics complex in the processing of car traffic is the rational processing of cargo flows in the logistics system. The purpose of the research is to choose the best option for the production of shunting work using the logistics approach to managing the supply chains of goods. As the optimization criterion for tackling the problem, minimization of the consumption of fuel and other resources in the organisation of manoeuvres has been proposed. In this paper, the analysis of the existing methods for calculating the fuel consumption of shunting diesel locomotives has been carried out. To determine the fuel consumption, the comparative analysis and assessment of possible alternative solutions has been fulfilled, as well as the choice of the optimal variant of the organization of shunting work has been made. In this paper, the mathematical apparatus based on the dynamic programming method has been proposed. As the result of the research carried out, the strategic modelling of shunting work has been developed in order to reduce energy costs at the marshalling station, using the logistic approach to solving organizational problems related to the management of shunting work. © 2023 Kaunas University of Technology.
