One of the objectives of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy is to produce "more with less", a concept that includes the development of sustainable and knowledge-based fisheries and aquaculture. Global aquaculture production reached 80.1 million tonnes in 2017, making it the fastest-growing animal food industry globally. In 2017, fisheries and aquaculture production in the EU Member States reached 6.0 million tonnes of live weight, representing 3.5% of world production. The study aimed to select aquaculture or fisheries products with the highest development potential to identify the most sustainable ones through a multi-criteria analysis.
