Lignin is a complex aromatic wood polymer, the polymeric structure of which is cross-linked with a variety of different physicochemical bonds. Lignin, in nature, is difficult to biodegrade, and reduces the bioavailability of the other wood constituents, mainly, cellulose. Its biodegradability can be enhanced by chemical pre-treatment, including acid, alkali, ammonia and urea treatment, steam explosion, mechanical dispersion by grinding and milling, and combined chemical and physical/mechanical treatments
