The aim of this study was to determine the optimal coagulation conditions for removal on natural organic matter (NOM) from humic rich water at Daugava water treatment plant in Riga (Latvia). The optimization of the existing treatment process was carried out in Jar test experiments by adjusting pH and alum dose and the removal efficacy of NOM, the residual aluminum concentration and the amount of sludge generated in the process were used as the criteria for the optimization. The removal of NOM was 64% which was obtained bu using an alum dose of 15 mg Al/l at pH 6. Lowering of pH to 5 increased the NOM removal efficacy however it also increased the residual aluminum concentration. The quantity of sludge was minimal after coagulation with alum 10 mg/L and increased with increase of alum dose. The study showed that there was a strong correlation between TOC removal and sludge weight and between specific UV absorbance (SUVA) value and sludge weight. Hydrophobic fraction removal was 61% in raw water and decreased to 57% after preozonation during Jar tests at pH 6 and alum dose 15 mg/l. The ratio 0.8 mg Al/mg TOC at pH level 6 was optimal for coagulation for humic-rich water in Riga (Latvia).
